Fostering joy and development

The experience of housing instability and homelessness is challenging for all of our guests, but especially our youngest. That’s why, at People Serving People, we provide school-aged children and teens with joy-filled activities and programs that foster learning, well-being, and community connection.

About our Youth Engagement Program

Who we serve

At People Serving People, we support the whole family. That’s why we offer our K-12 Youth Engagement Program year-round. During the school year, we provide after-school support, and when school is out for the summer, our programming changes to provide additional engagement during the day.

  • 15 Children Each Day

Our current space and staffing levels only support 15 of those children in our K-12 Youth Engagement Program on a daily basis

  • 140 K-12 Children in 2025

In 2025, we were able to provide Youth Engagement programming to 140 of our K-12 aged guests.

  • 325 Snacks

Average number of snacks served each month

The need exceeds our resources

  • 140 Children Waitlisted

Were on the waitlist to join our Youth Engagement program in 2025.

  • 70 Days on Waitlist

The average time on our waiting list in 2025 (compared to the average stay of 90 to 120 days).

  • 13 Children Waitlisted Daily

Number of K-12 kids on our waitlist at any given time in 2025.

People Serving People’s Downtown Shelter serves hundreds of children each year, and we can only meet the needs of some of our families. Children experiencing homelessness need holistic support, including after-school K-12 programming, summer programming, and educational activities that support them during a traumatic time and set them up for success when their family secures stable housing.

Our after-school and summer programming

Supporting the whole family

The heart of our K-12 Youth Engagement Program is our After-School program, which also operates during the summer months. The program is open to children in kindergarten through 6th grade and is held each afternoon, Monday through Friday. We provide a safe space for children to encounter delight and joy. Children also receive:

  • Homework support
  • Engaging art and STEM activities
  • Social and emotional learning and development

K-12 pre-teen and teen activities

We complement our after-school and summer programs with engagement activities that foster a lifelong love of learning, focusing on topics that interest our K-12 guests. This includes programs aimed our older K-12 guests, ages 10-17. Our current activities include:

Youth (Pre-teen) Night

  • For guests ages 10 to 12
  • Occurs monthly
  • Average of 8-10 pre-teens attended each event in 2025

Teen Night

  • For guests ages 13 to 17
  • Occurs monthly
  • Average of 6 to 8 teens attended each event in 2025

Community partners making our program possible

Community partners caring for families in their community make our programming possible. Discover how our community partners generously donate their time, talent, and resources to support K-12 children staying at our Downtown Shelter.

Free Arts supports our After-School Program

Free Arts is a program of Big Brothers Big Sisters that supports artistic and personal youth development through art learning with the guidance of mentors. Sessions are one hour, once a week, for 15-week semesters. Some semesters are supported by “teaching artists” who are local artists sharing their skills and crafts.

ArtiCulture supports our Teen Nights

ArtiCulture sponsors a local artist who leads a two-hour workshop on various crafts. Their mission is to create space and opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to find creative expressions through the visual arts.

Northern Clay Center supports our After School Program and Youth Nights

Northern Clay Center sponsors a ceramics artist who leads a one-hour workshop for youth to create a guided project, or they may choose to make a project of their choice. Youth receive their work back after about 3 weeks once projects are finished with the final glazing and firing process.

Science From Scientists supports our Youth Nights

Science From Scientists supports our Youth Nights by providing a local scientist to host a one-hour lesson and hands-on experiment (aligned to MN science standards). The program is designed to support science classrooms, but the youth enjoyed the experiences provided.

Starbase Minnesota supports our Youth Nights

Starbase Minnesota supports our Youth Nights by bringing the magic of STEM through interactive activities like learning about robotics.

Science Museum of Minnesota supports our After-School Program

The Science Museum of Minnesota supports our after-school program with outreach events providing hands-on STEM activities and experiences.
